The Family Practice Residency Program at Summa Barberton Hospital was established in 1982. It has progressively grown and has graduated 108 physicians. These physicians have gone on to various practices throughout the U.S., as well as other countries. At Summa Barberton Hospital we are committed to a focused training program in family practice. That is why we offer a "one of a kind in Northeast Ohio" residency program. Our residents compete with no other fellow or residents from other specialties for patient-care opportunities. This allows our residents to participate in virtually all procedures that, elsewhere, would be reserved for other specialty residents. Graduation from an accredited medical school within the last three years. 2. U.S. citizen or permanent resident status required; our institution does not sponsor any visas. 3. Passed the USMLE 1+2, preferably with good scores on the first attempt. 4. Highly recommended to have U.S. clinical experience. 5. Take applications through ERAS only.
![]() J. Randall Richard, M.D., F.A.A.F.P. Director Dr. Richard graduated from Bowling Green State University in 1975 and completed his M.D. degree at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine in 1979. After completing family practice residency training at St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Dayton, Ohio in 1982, Dr. Richard served six years in the U.S.A.F. Medical Corps as a family doctor. He is Board Certified by the American Board of Family Medicine, and is Professor of Clinical Family Medicine at Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine. Special interests include healthcare for the under-served including international health, migrant farm wokers, and a local free clinic. He is the Medical Director of the migrant Farmworker Clinic, in Willard, Ohio which actively involves Barberton Hospital residents and medical students. He and his wife have four children, six grandchildren, and a golden retriever. ![]() Jon A. Elias, M.D., A.B.F.P. Associate Director Dr. Elias graduated from Kent State University in 1985 with a B.S. degree in Biology. He attended The Ohio State University College of Medicine, receiving his M.D. degree in 1989. He completed a three-year Family Practice Residency at Barberton Hospital. After residency, Dr. Elias practiced family medicine in rural Oregon for four years, during which he gained surgical, obstetrical and extensive emergency experience. Dr. Elias has special interests in outpatient procedures and pediatrics. He and his wife, Mickie, have five children. They enjoy outdoor activities including hiking, camping and backpacking. ![]() Jonathan Edwards, M.D. Assistant Director Dr. Edwards, a Cleveland, Ohio native, is a 2002 graduate of the Barberton Hospital Family Practice Residency Program. He completed his B.S. degree (graduating summa cum laude) in Mathematics at Marshall University in West Virginia, his Masters Degree in Mathematics at the University of Kentucky and his Medical Degree from the University of Cincinnati. Dr. Edwards and his wife Karen have four children. In his spare time he enjoys running and tennis. He is fluent in Spanish. ![]() Nancy Flickinger, M.D. Assistant Director Dr. Flickinger, a Barberton native, is a graduate of the 1981 charter class of Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine. After her residency at a local Akron hospital, she was in private practice. She is also currently the Director for the Family Medicine Clerkship, a third year rotation requirement at NEOUCOM. She and her husband are the parents of a son. ![]() Laura Novak, M.D., A.B.F.P. Assistant Director Dr. Novak received her B.A. in biology from the University of Toledo. She then attended The Ohio State University College of Medicine, graduating in 1980. After completing her Family Practice Residency at Toledo Hospital, she began teaching at St. Thomas Hospital's Family Practice Residency Program. She practiced for 10 years there and served as Undergraduate Director. Since joining the Barberton Hospital Family Practice Faculty, she has maintained her interests in obstetrics, pediatrics and women's healthcare. Dr. Novak and her husband Ed have a son. Her husband is a counselor. ![]() Lisa Schroeder, M.D. Assistant Director Born in Ravenna, Ohio, she completed the combined six year BS/MD program through the Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine and the University of Akron (graduating magna cum laude). Dr. Schroeder is married. She and her husband Bill enjoy spending time with their two children, as well as traveling and hiking. She also has been involved in martial arts and teaching Sunday school.
Karen K. Kirk, MSASS, LISW Director of Behavioral Science Mrs. Kirk graduated from The University of Akron in 1989 with a B.A. in psychology. She graduated with a Masters in Social Administration with a special focus in Mental Health from Case Western Reserve University in 2000. She is a member of the National Association of Social Workers. Mrs. Kirk has clinical experience with geriatrics in long-term care, medical discharge planning, obstetrics, adoption and marital and family counseling. Most recently her focus has been in private practice. Mrs. Kirk and her husband have two children. They enjoy sporting events and travel.

Jaydeep Radhakrishnan, M.D. is a graduate of Ross University. He was born and raised in Houston, Texas. Jaydeep is married to a chemical engineer. He enjoys tennis, cooking and fishing.
Babak Iranmanesh, M.D. is a graduate of Ross University. He was born in Iran and moved to Baltimore, MD where he attended the University of Maryland. Babak likes playing tennis, reading, and watching movies.
Birendra Piya, M.D. is a graduate of the American University of the Caribbean. He was born and raised in Nepal where he also worked in the Peace Corps. Birendra enjoys international travel, hiking, and volleyball.
Gaurav Dang, M.D. is a graduate of St George’s University. He was born in India but raised in Winchester, Massachusetts. He likes watching and playing sports. He is able to speak Spanish and Hindi.
Leuy Tong, M.D. is a graduate of the University of St. Eustutius. He was born in Vietnam and relocated to Houston, Texas when he was five. Leuy is engaged. He enjoys basketball, tennis and biking.
Ngoc Ly, M.D. is a graduate of Ross University. He was born in Vietnam and relocated to Fairfax, Virginia after high school. Ngoc is married to a pharmacist. He likes spending time with family and playing computer games.
Dr. Roger Chen was born in Taipei, Taiwan. He graduated from the American University of the Caribbean and received his undergraduate degree from the University of California and a Master’s degree in Physiology and Biophysics from Georgetown University. In his spare time, he enjoys playing the violin and cello, tennis, basketball, racquetball, reading, and watching movies.
Dr. Briana Kirt was born in Traverse City, Michigan. She graduated from Ross University and received her undergraduate degree from Northern Michigan University. In her spare time, she enjoys hiking, metalsmithing/jewelry making, and cooking.
Dr. Justin Malhotra was born in Cleveland, Ohio. He graduated from Ross University and received his undergraduate degree from The Ohio State University. In his spare time, he enjoys meditation, musical instruments (classical Indian: tabla, dhol, harmonium), running, and reading.
Dr. Sabrina Mia was born in Honolulu, Hawaii. She graduated from Ross University and received her undergraduate degree from the University of California at Irvine. In her spare time, she enjoys dancing (classical Indian, competitive Bhangra, Hindi Film, hip-hop, jazz, salsa, Bengali Folk) with a passion. She also enjoys traveling, ethnic cooking, camping, and spending time with her family.
Dr. Pramesh Patel was born in Nadiad, India. He graduated from Ross University and received his undergraduate degree from the University of Illinois. In his spare time, he enjoys the outdoors – hiking/camping, basketball, golfing, roller-blading, art/sketching, and meditation/yoga.
Dr. Puja Sharma was born in New York, New York. She graduated from the American University of the Caribbean and received her undergraduate degree from Binghamton University. In her spare time, she loves to play tennis, cook, read, and dance.
Dr. Nawaz Ahmed was born in Dallas, Texas. He received his Doctor of Medicine from Ross University School of Medicine and his undergraduate degree from The Ohio State University. In his spare time, he enjoys football, reading, politics, history, soccer and singing. He is married.
Dr. Jasrup Kaur was born in Moga, India. She received her Doctor of Medicine from Ross University School of Medicine and her undergraduate degree from Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey. In her spare time, she enjoys running, reading, traveling, cooking, interior designing and do-it-yourself projects.
Dr. Gary Machado was born in Mumbai, India. He received his Doctor of Medicine from St. Matthew's University School of Medicine and his undergraduate degree from the University of Akron. In his spare time, he enjoys sports, reading, photography, travel, music, fitness, diving, fishing, cooking and animals.
Dr. Mathew Murikan was born in Teaneck, New Jersey. He received his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) from Kasturba Medical College. In his spare time, he enjoys reading novels and medical journals, and watching and playing basketball.
Dr. Pallavi Sindhu was born in Chandigarh, India. She received her Doctor of Medicine from Saba University School of Medicine and her undergraduate degree from Saba University. In her spare time, she enjoys reading, skating, traveling, and dancing. She is also an avid animal lover. Dr. Sindhu and Dr. Eric Waddington, also a PGY-1 FP resident at Barberton, are married.
Dr. Eric Waddington was born in Hollywood, Florida. He received his Doctor of Medicine from Saba University School of Medicine and his undergraduate degree from the State University of New York at Fredonia. In his spare time, he enjoys running, playing the guitar, and is a rare coin collector. Dr. Waddington is married to Dr. Sindhu, also a PGY-1 FP resident at Barberton. Barberton Family Practice Update Electronic Medical Records are coming to Barberton Family Practice Residency Program. eClinical Works will "go-live" in the Fall 2010. The Migrant Clinic in Celeryville, Ohio, which was started by our director, Dr. Richard, will be running May - October. Residents and students are invited to join Dr. Richard and Dr. Edwards on Wednesday afternoons. Barberton Community Health Clinic: PGY-2 and PGY-3 residents, along with Drs. Richard, Elias, and Edwards continue to provide much needed services, twice a week, at our local Free Clinic.
