Keeping Our Promise to the Community

In early 2006, construction began on Summa Barberton Hospital’s 22,000 square foot comprehensive cancer center. “This is very exciting for us. It is our first external expansion since the community overwhelmingly approved our purchase of a portion of Tuscora Park,” said Jim Stonkus, vice president of business development. “As good stewards of this land we plan to keep our promise to the people of Barberton and provide our communities a state-of-the-art cancer center that rivals any other center in this region.

Included in Parkview Center is medical oncology, radiation oncology, women’s care services like mammography, outpatient chemotherapy and physician offices. According to Syamala Ahmad, M.D., the center’s new radiation oncologist, “The addition of radiation oncology to Summa Barberton Hospital is significant. Patients will no longer have to travel to other institutions to receive radiation treatments. From a physician’s perspective this is very exciting because all of the physicians associated with the cancer program at Summa Barberton Hospital are able to offer our input into the way the center is being designed and run and what components should be included.”

Dr. Sprance Appointed Medical Director of Comprehensive Breast Care Program

Lee Anne Sprance, M.D., FACS has been named Medical Director of the Comprehensive Breast Care Program at Summa Barberton Hospital. Ultimately, one in every six women in the United States will develop breast cancer. It is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in the United States and worldwide (excluding skin cancer). Recent American Cancer Society statistics for Ohio show that in our state, one in every six women will eventually develop the disease.
